Hi Lauren,
UVA has a tradition of “streaking the lawn” that has gone on since probably the 1970’s.  As far as I have observed, there is no correlation between streaking and sexual assault.  I’ve heard police officers make that allegation, but only because they aren’t sure what to make of naked students parading about.  Generally this is done in groups and there is a higher likelihood of offending someone than the streakees being assaulted.  Since sexual assault is a crime most often committed in isolation, this somewhat defeats the purpose of streaking, which is a public act.  It would be interesting to see if any research has been done on this.
Best,
Claire

Subject: College Traditions Concern

Hello SAPC,

I work at a college that has a tradition of students running around at midnight naked on a day of the year, but it has evolved to both midnights surround the particular day (so it happens twice).   I was wondering if there was any other institution out there that has a similar tradition on their campus, or had one, and would be willing to chat with me on the phone? I would like to talk about what you are doing, if anything, or if you had done something, to address the concerns related to these types of traditions and sexual misconduct and assault.

Thank you,
