Matt,

At the University of Houston – Victoria we have incorporated a sexual assault and dating violence component during Freshman Orientation for the past 4 years, since receiving a Campus Grant from the DOJ/OVW.  It is usually the last event of the weekend orientation (Sunday afternoon) and we train the group leaders to meet with small groups of students right afterward to answer any questions or concerns about the presentation, and about interpersonal violence in general.  The first couple of years we had 2 presenters:  Tamika Hall and Tim Collins.  Tamika Hall is no longer doing college performances, but Tim Collins is.  He was an incredible actor and understood this topic well.  He performed “The Script” for our students.  www.timcollinsonline.comThe last 2 years we have had Catharsis Productions perform “Sex Signals” on our campus.  This was also well received by our studentsThey have incorporated more active bystander information and that was helpful.  Here is their contact info:  http://www.catharsisproductions.com/.

Hope that is helpful.

Subject: Orientation Programming

Hello everyone,

I am wondering if any of you currently incorporate any sexual violence prevention programming into New Student Orientation or any special events/days/weeks during the time that new students first arrive on campus. If you do, I would be very much interested in hearing about them and what methods/platforms have proven to be most effective.

Thanks so much!

Best,

Matt McMahon
