Thanks everyone for your insightful comments! I wanted to add my thoughts as well.
Coming from a predominantly white campus to a historically black campus and then to consulting work on both campuses, I noticed that a lot of the requests and education about gendered violence at HBCUs was actually around DV and NOT SV. I often had to purposely put SV in the conversation when there was none (very little), which is the opposite of some of the comments already given.
Also, I found that people were much more comfortable with the term DV and when I would try to use terms like relationship violence or IPV, it was met with questions. I also found that when the federal mandates around SV prevention and intervention became more prominent for campuses, I have begun to see a shift in the focus at HBCUs from DV to include SV education and intervention.
These are my observations and definitely not meant to speak for all HBCU experiences.

Great conversation, Juliette and Susan!I'm not sure why, but from the local DV program point of view, it's been very frustrating. And I'm thrilled it's changing.I remember working for several local domestic violence programs years ago, approaching local colleges to collaborate. They never seemed to have time for us - sometimes we'd read the newspaper and see that they'd invited a DV speaker and hadn't even told us, much less invited us! Did others from DV programs have a similar experience?Until the violence stops,

I'd love to hear your thoughts about why you feel dating/domestic violence and stalking have historically been left out of campus prevention and response programs. I'm compiling a list and very much value your expertise. You are welcome of course to make this a larger discussion over the listservs, or email me off line.Thank you!
