Dear Friends,

A group of nearly 20 higher ed associations and national victim advocacy organizations have written an open letter to state elected officials regarding legislation that has been proposed in at least 9 states this year related to campus sexual assault.  The first group of bills would require employees at colleges and universities to mandatorily refer all reports of sexual violence that they receive to local law enforcement.  The second group would create rights of  attorney representation, judicial review and the ability to receive monetary damages for students and student organizations accused of misconduct-- but not for student accusers or victims of such misconduct.

Inside Higher Ed published a piece on the letter which includes a link to the letter itself: https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2015/02/19/open-letter-calls-legislators-reconsider-campus-sexual-assault-bills NASPA, AAUW, the Association of Student Conduct Administrators, Casa de Esperanza: the National Latin@ Network, the Clery Center, the Domestic Violence Legal Empowerment and Appeals Project, the Education Law Association, Futures Without Violence, IACLEA, Jewish Women International, Know Your IX, the National Alliance to End Sexual Violence, the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs, National Council of Jewish Women, the National Domestic Violence Hotline, the National Organization of Sisters of Color Ending Sexual Assault, the Victim Rights Law Center and VTV Family Outreach Foundation all signed the letter.

I hope you all find the letter useful-- it has a number of points about federal law and its difference from the criminal law that might be helpful even aside from the issues with the bills themselves.

Best,

Nancy
