I think the answers to Qs 1 – 3 are going to be institution specific. The answer to #4 is that there is no balance. If this person is a “victim advocate” then s/he should have loyalty ONLY to the victim. Isn’t this exactly the issue that has cause so much criticism of Title IX programs? You cannot have a program that serves victims if it really tries to protect the University. --jim clark James G. Clark Founder and attorney Victim Rights Center of Connecticut, Inc. tel 203.350.3515 | fax 203.745.0073 blog.vrcct.org From: Peters, Sara [mailto:] We have a very complicated BIT case which has created a series of issues between our victim advocate and our Dean of Students office. Could you please respond to the following questions? Thanks for any help and guidance you can provide. 1. Could you describe the boundaries for your sexual assault advocate in terms of her/his involvement in Dean of Students including facilitating meetings and passing on information such as statements if DOS staff is not available? 2. Could you please describe her/his involvement in relaying information to the victim? 3. Is the victim advocate seen as the “go between” or central point of contact for other university offices? 4. How does your victim advocate draw the line between advocating for the victim and protecting the University? Sara K. Peters
