Interesting, thank you for passing this along.  From the looks of it, I don't find either result convincing -- from the Bennett study nor from the NCAA.  As always, I think it best that we cite statistics that have undergone peer review and published in an academic journal.

Crosset, Benedict and others conducted a study that revealed varsity athletes at Division I schools were significantly more likely to commit sexual assaults than other male students. Crosset and his colleagues reviewed 107 sexual assault cases reported at 30 Division I schools from 1991 to 1993. Male athletes were accused in 19 percent of the assaults while constituting just 3.3 percent of the male student body.

 

The fact that they chose 30 Division I schools could be a biased sample, and not knowing anything about those schools that were chosen I think it is hard to generalize this number across all athletes across all Divisions. Additionally, I feel that 107 cases over a two year period is a pretty small sample considering how generalized the finding is. 

 

The NCAA report that I shared (which I recognize people could say is biased based on the nature of the organization) uses a wider range of data to paint a more comprehensive picture.

I suspect you are correct -- could you please give us more information?  Where is this study being used, what is a reference for the study, and why you think it is flawed?

If you come across a number in your travels that states 1 in 3 I don’t recommend using that data, it’s from a pretty flawed study in the early 1990s.
