Hello!

I am a previous Hospital SANE Nurse who now works at Hampton University as a “Sexual Assault Nurse”. The university I work at does NOT have its own SANE program on campus (mostly I believe, due to having two hospitals that are available to us). My role here at the University is to provide 24/7 on-call, confidential consultation and options on ones choices after being sexually assaulted, hospital accompaniment during rape exam, referrals/information on STI prophylaxis, emergency contraception, counseling and support services. I also assist with educating students and staff and assist with events.  This is a position I guess you could say, I made for myself after being hired as an RN in the Health Center. (Not a job title I was specifically hired for).

I have attached the policy and procedures that one of our hospitals follow. Not sure how helpful this would be but at least it gives you an idea how extensive it can be to run a SANE program when you consider the equipment needed, length of training of nurse (this hospital requires them to be ER nurses) and the importance of testifying in court, medications and testing for STI to include HIV testing and prophylaxis.

In my opinion, to answer your questions-mind you, without being a part of a University SANE Program…  it would probably be beneficial to use an area in the ER as many sexual assault cases must be medically screened and cleared for physical injuries first before a sane exam can even begin. Also, keeping in mind the importance of having a private area within the ER for the survivor to wait –not in the ER lobby. Also, most SANE programs have rotating on-call nurses on duty.  Although the training for SANE is only 40 hours (at least in Virginia), there is usually a significant amount of on-the-job-training for SANE nurses to complete a specific number of exams with a preceptor prior to  feeling comfortable completing the PERK by themselves.

I hope this helps and I wish you all the best of luck! Thank you for all you do in keeping America’s college campuses safer!

Sincerely,

Subject: SANE services on campus after hours

Good afternoon,

We are exploring the best and most practical options for providing SANE services for our students outside of normal Health Center hours (8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) because we do not have SANE certified nurses at our local hospital.

I would be interested to hear from schools who provide SANE services outside of health center hours to see how the process is managed, especially around the following questions:

o   What space is used – do on call nurses go to the local hospital or open up the Health Center space

o   Are nurses from the health center rotating on call duty or are outside nurses contracted

I would appreciate any feedback, as we are relatively new to providing SANE services in general and want to be sure we are providing our survivors with the best available resources.

Thanks so much,

Lindsey
