Erin, Here at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Oklahoma my office has gone by the name of the: Violence Prevention Project aka- VPP. However, upon research
involving articles, calling or emailing other Universities and mainly talking to students I got the feedback that the word “violence” was intimidating and students did not like it. Some even brought up the fact that if they were survivors of an assault for
example, they might not necessarily “identify” that it was violent and therefore “feel” like they did not need services from my office. Overall, the consensus from students was that they did not like the name and wanted something more positive. These are students
that actually volunteer in my office. I came up with several names and settled on Project SPEAK. Staff and faculty from different departments were emailed and asked their opinions. I also got in touch with students ages 18-24 and got their feedback as well.
The majority liked SPEAK. (Support, Promote, Educate, Advocate for Knowledge) and I now have a mission statement that ties into it. The name comes from a movie about a girl who was raped and lost her voice, then with the help of friends, family and a teacher
she is able to regain it. I wanted students who came to my office to feel empowered and I think this name is a step in the right direction.
In regards to my title I am known as the “Health Education & Violence Prevention Specialist.” I have been working alongside the Counseling and Wellness Centers
on campus to come up with a different name since it is pretty broad. However, we are tinkering with several ideas: Project SPEAK: Prevention Educator Wellness Advocate Prevention Specialist Prevention Advocate
Prevention Coordinator
Hope this helps. Michelle Stansel, B.A. Master of Ed. Candidate '14 University of Central Oklahoma

Hi all, There is conversation happening on our campus about the most appropriate name for a violence prevention coordinator position. I’m hoping folks can share names
that your campuses are using and any rationale behind including or excluding the word “violence”. Feedback I’ve received from other administrators is that they would prefer to have a more positive-sounding title. Assistance is appreciated!!!
