Weaving a World Without Violence 2014: Sexual Assault Prevention and Intervention Conference

The New York State Coalition Against Sexual Assault is pleased to announce our 2014 Statewide Conference, featuring two days of workshops, presentations, and networking. This two day event is free for NYSCASA members. If you are not currently a member, you can become an individual member for $30. We look forward to seeing you in June!

Day 1: Boosting Prevention Efforts

From thinking about root causes of violence and why we do prevention work, to evaluating what's working best in our prevention work, this day has something for everyone interested in preventing sexual violence. Please join us for presentations from local and national experts covering a variety of topics. Our speakers will leave you with a deeper understanding of various parts of prevention, as well as provide you with some concrete skills you can bring home and apply to your current prevention efforts.

NYSCASA's annual meeting will be held briefly before lunch, and an optional Women of Color roundtable discussion will be held during the lunch break. This day concludes with an optional yoga session, lead by a local practitioner specializing in yoga for trauma survivors.

Day 2: “You are not Alone” Hosted by Karen Ziegler, Albany County Crime Victim and Sexual Violence Center and Lindsey Crusan, Sexual Assault and Crime Victims Assistance Program at Samaritan Hospital

There are inherent complexities in working with sexual assault (SA) victims. When a person who identifies as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Transgendered (LGBT) has been sexually assaulted, this requires additional sensitivity and skills for service providers. While not experts, we want to start a dialogue to improve the experience of LGBT individuals who are also SA victims. Our goals are to reduce re-victimization and minimize re-traumatization while providing the highest standard of care possible.

We are seeking participation from the multiple disciplines that may benefit from this training: law enforcement/first responders; medical providers; victim advocates, prosecution; and colleges. We will be discussing each discipline and how we can increase our sensitivity and skills. In the afternoon, we will be working in small groups, participating in specific exercises involving related scenarios to expand and polish skills and improve understanding of each of our systems.

Anticipated Outcomes:

·                         Educate participants of all disciplines who serve/respond to sexual assault victims on the dynamics and specifics of working with LGBT individuals;

·                         Increase collaboration across disciplines, to improve victim services and system interfaces;

·                         Provide participants with skills and resources to enhance their individual and community response to sexual assault in the LGBT community.

Format:

5 presentations of approximately 15-20 minutes, allowing 10-15 minutes of Q and A;

At least 3 table top exercises done in small groups with report outs from each group to the larger group.
