I agree with Claire – this is a good way to keep the very much needed safe space and yet have available wider information for those who wish it. I know some days I am absolutely daunted by my inbox.

I thank Claire so much. Both SAPC and WRAC are crucial for those of us working alone on small campuses - and without many colleagues who want to learn and grow on our subject matter. I learn so much from these two listservs – on the both the big issues such as Title IX, DCL, Campus SAVE, etc. – and also challenges and solutions for the daily life of doing SV and IPV work. I don’t often think I have much to add to these conversations – but I promise you, I am reading everything, sometimes repeatedly. Much is saved in topic folders. I take what I learn here to my administrators – and my highest marks on my annual evaluations are always centered on “job knowledge.”

Thanks to all of you.

Here's your moderator weighing in.  I think this is an excellent suggestion, but as the person who has to moderate, I could see this turning into a full-time job.  And This is something I do on my own.

This list was started so that folks who are working on campus can share concerns, questions, etc.  I love the fact that it has helped so many people, and that with the implementation of the DCL and Campus SaVE we have a place to ask questions.  But this changes the original intent of this list.  If that's the case, then maybe what needs to happen is that a broader list is started that allows for these larger conversations. We can mass subscribe anyone who would like to join that list, and then modify SAPC so that it sticks to the original purpose—as a safe space for besieged advocates to get support and information.

What do you all think?  It might be that we could use a different platform for the larger discussion forum.

Thanks,

Claire

Good point, Gina.  I think one option would be to have the moderator and our members just be sure to “take discussions” offline more quickly after 2-3 posts.

Here’s my language for the invite:

I belong to a listserve that discusses sexual assault issues among students and campuses and would like to invite you to participate.  Our members include those who work on campuses and at support centers, researchers, authors, activists, policy makers, attorneys, counselors, and many others who are committed to staying current with this field. I would personally value your thoughts, and I’m certain your contributions will benefit others as well.

Hi Katie,

Would it be possible for you to create an e-mail template explaining what the listserv is all about and stating that we feel that the person we are sending it to may have valuable insight, so we would like to invite them to join- and then share the template with all of us? We can then forward it on to folks who we think could contribute to the ongoing conversation?

My only question is, are we concerned that by inviting lots of other people, that the listserv may produce a mass amount of e-mails?  I think the conversation is incredibly important, but worry that we may get flooded with e-mails and not be able to keep up with all of them.  Is there any way to manage this?

Thanks!

So glad that so many of you agree, and forgive my typo in my original post.

I propose that we have a “Share the Love of our Cause” Valentine’s campaign and all recruit some of our favorite bright thinkers, attorneys, researchers, and government policy folks to join our discussions.  If we all reached out to 2 or 3 of our favorite people, we would likely have an even more helpful resource within the next month.

If any of you belong to other list serves for student affairs, sexual violence, higher education administrators, women’s centers or advocacy programs, and would like to have me send the same invite to the 35 people I would like to invite to our group, please email me directly with the information about how to join that listserve.  I would be happy to help us all network as effectively and helpfully as possible.  Fresh minds and thoughts will help us all be stronger in 2014!

With the blend of posts I have seen posting, it is my impression that we seem to have people from businesses (like law firms and consulting firms), those working at schools, those who are professors, survivors, policy makers, activists, and many other folks in this space.

I am going to send out the word to about 35 people I think would be fantastic contributors.  I think they would need to email in order to request to join us.  If I am mistaken, please let me know.

Thanks to everyone for your great passion for this cause!

Katie

Subject: Question for our Listserve

Hi everyone,

I was thinking about the voices we hear on our collective discussions.  I find this listserve and the questions posed to be incredibly helpful.

I wondered if anyone else ever thought about the guidance that we may be missing and other viewpoints we may not be hearing.

Would it be possible to invites some of the agencies that have the most accurate answers on some of the law and policy questions to our group?

We seem to have 2 or 3 attorneys who provide their opinions and thoughts quite frequently; and information passed along from primary sources through secondary means.

Perhaps, we might want other perspectives from attorneys who represent schools and as well as those who represent victims.

Does anyone else think this would be helpful in keeping us all best-informed?

Katie Koestner
