Hello everyone,

I apologize in advance for any cross postings resulting in multiple emails.

We are working to defining the limits of confidentiality of our new student/peer advocacy group  at Middlebury College. The students are undergoing training to gain privilege as crisis workers under state law. We feel very confident that there are limits to confidentiality for these students when there are threats to personal and community safety, but are struggling to identify a clear definition of “threat” which a student can comfortably assess. We know that some institutions are using suicidal thoughts as a limit, while others are using a suicide plan.

If your institution or community organization has a peer advocacy program, could you share with me directly () :

1.       How do you specifically define limits of confidentiality for your advocates?

2.       How are you training your advocates to recognize these limits or instances of threat? Any training documents, presentations, or assessment tools would be most helpful.

I will be happy to post the compiled responses back to the lists.

All the best,

Barbara
