There are some good quotes about the importance of campus prevention and response efforts in the University of Georgia’s independent student newspaper the Red & Black today:

Programs exist at many campuses, but a shining example is the Sexual Assault and Prevention Awareness Center at the University of Michigan, one of UGA’s aspirational peer institutions.

Holly Rider-Milkovich, director of the 27-year-old program, said the number of reports the center investigated in one year increased from three reported sexual assaults to 60 because it was more active in examining them.

“When you have a visible well-established, well-supported program on campus that is devoted to that work it sends a powerful message that it is important to the institution and that they’re willing to put their resources behind that work,” Rider-Milkovich said. “You know, that it’s not just lip service — it’s something that they put their staff time, it’s something that they put valuable community resources behind.”

In 2011, when UGA reported five rapes, the University of Michigan reported 14.
