Colleagues – if you are looking for a great speaker on sexual/relationship violence issues, we have had Janine Latus at Old Dominion University. July 4th was the 10 year anniversary of her sister Amy’s murder. Below is
some information about her:
Best-selling author and advocate Janine Latus is a dynamo who changes people’s minds and lives. Her book, If I Am Missing or Dead: a sister’s story of love, murder and liberation, has sold more than a quarter of a million copies and has
been translated into five languages, including Chinese.
Missing or Dead is the story of two sisters who grew up to choose angry and controlling men. One of the sisters breaks free and thrives, the other is murdered by the man she loves. Janine was the one who survived and she tells
achingly of searching for her sister’s body.
As a speaker Janine unfurls the spectrum of emotional abuse and its escalation too often to physical violence. She tells what it’s like from the inside of the mind of a victim — what she experiences, why she stays — and of
the horror of what happened to her beloved sister.
“I did not save Amy,” she says, “so I wrote this book to save other Amys. I wrote it to start a national conversation about domestic violence, because the idea that what happens in the home stays in the home is getting us
killed.”
Janine helps audiences recognize the spectrum of abuse in their own lives and in others’. She is now scheduling speeches for the upcoming school year.
“I just wanted to let you know that the impact of your talk has been reverberating like a stone thrown into a pond,” writes Melissa Lukin, Executive Director of Community Overcoming Relationship Abuse (CORA) in San Mateo,
California. “The splash was fantastic enough itself, but the ripples have been sobering and hopeful all at once.”
Kris Uhen of the Milwaukee Women’s Center writes, “Her speech was heart breaking and sobering, and truly inspirational. Because of Janine, we raised more money this year than in the 22-year history of hosting our event.”
Janine promises a dynamic and interactive presentation. Please contact her at <> to book her for your school or organization.
