Well said Claire.  Another good resource for instructors using this holistic model and as well as resources is the National Women's Martial Arts Federation Self Defense Instructor Certification program.  The quality of these instructors is very high and many also work in the field of victim/survivor services.  www.nwmaf.org

Ryan,
You might want to contact Martha McCaughey (Director of Appalachian State WS program) and Lisa Speidel (she's on this list) for references in this regard. Both did their doctoral work on SD. Both are proponents, as am I (not as primary prevention but as tertiary prevention, plus it's very empowering), so they may be familiar with the literature that discusses this issue. I do know that arguments against it vary in their rationales; some far predate the public health model that many of us have come to adopt. These range from the concept that meeting violence with the same perpetuates violence (you can't use the Master's tools...) to ideas that it revictimizes survivors. I know from experience (as a SD instructor and victim advocate) that the latter can happen at the hands of irresponsible and incompetent instructors. But most feminist courses allow for conversation and processing, and emphasizes women's strengths and choices.

Good luck,
Claire
