Hi Ryan,
All of the research that has opposed using self-defense workshops is based on the use of the public health model to prevent sexual violence.  The public health strategy is interested in what causes rape culture and utilizes risk and protective factor research to better understand this. The potential problem with positioning self-defense classes as a sexual violence prevention tactic is that they will do nothing to stop rape culture, though they may prevent one incident of sexual violence, which is obviously a good thing.

The CDC website is helpful and offers many resources to better understand the way that they and the WHO define sexual violence prevention.

Hope this helps,
Jen

Hello,

I am wondering if anyone has any research articles they can send me that would oppose using self-defense workshops to prevent sexual assault.  I really appreciate anything you can send.

Thanks,
