Hi everyone,

I haven’t written to this list before, but wanted to reply to this message, as I was just recommending relevant books to someone yesterday.

I would second “Trauma and Recovery” by Judith Herman, which is a veritable bible of basics on trauma (both experiencing it and working with it), and does an amazing job of just describing and explaining trauma & post-traumatic symptoms, as well as tracing a history of sexual violence being named and acknowledged as trauma.

In addition to that, I would highly recommend  “Thriving In the Wake of Trauma” by Thema Bryant-Davis, who was actually a student of Herman’s.  It is written for survivors or practitioners, with LOTS of activities and specifics around race/gender/ability/immigration status/SES/sexuality/etc.  It’s a helpful compliment to Herman’s book, which lacks effort/insight around some of these issues other than gender.

Hope that’s helpful.

Best,

Gaurav

Hello Charity,

I would recommend “Trauma and Recovery” by Judith Herman.  She draws really interesting parallels between trauma survivors and combat veterans, and emphasizes the need to consider political and social context when addressing trauma.

In terms of videos, these are a few that we have found useful:

Beyond Beats and Rhymes

The Line

Tough Guise

Wrestling with Manhood

V-Day: Until the Violence Stops

Killing Us Softly 4

No! The Rape Documentary

The Media Education Foundation is a great resource for documentary films.  Check it out at:  http://www.mediaed.org/

I hope this helps!

Subject: Recommended Readings

Hello All!

I am currently working on building a  library of resources for my students.

Do you have any recommended readings for survivors of sexual assault and IPV, particularly touching on the topic of recovery?

Have you found particular books/videos to be empowering for your students?

It is also important to have resources that represent diverse perspectives, beliefs and cultures.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions!
