Good afternoon. In preparation for an event during our upcoming consent campaign, I'm creating a list of recent films or TV shows which present opportunities to talk about consent and bystander intervention. I'm looking for films/scenes where consent is given and respected, where consent isn't given, and also where bystander intervention is and is not practiced. The idea is to engage students with positive examples and to facilitate a discussion about what could have happened differently in the other examples.
I've created a short list below, which I'd love to add to. I'd also like to add films that represent more diverse people, in age, race, and gender. I'm not interested in graphically violent scenes which might be triggering. If you have anything to add, could you please email me?
Positive examples:
Juno-Paulie Bleeker asks "Can we make out now?"
Scott Pilgrim-During an intimate encounter, Ramona lets Scott know she's done, and he stops.
Hancock-(not a reference to intimacy, but rather crossing boundaries) During a shoot out scene, Hancock asks an officer he intends to carry out of the crossfire, "Do I have permission to touch your body?" http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/article/do_i_have_permission_to_touch_your_body
Clips for discussion:
Wedding Crashers-Vince Vaugh's character is tied to a bed and assaulted
Yes Man-Jim Carey says "yes" to his older neighbor's pressure to engage in sex right after he promises himself to say "yes" to everything, even if he doesn't want to.
Superbad-The main story line is about a quest to obtain alcohol and get a girl so drunk that she's not able to sexually refuse (ie. assault). Also, one of the boys arrives at the party and finds the girl he is interested in drunk. The folks at the party tell him that if he gets drunk too it will be okay.
Observe and Report-The film portrays a scene where Ana Ferris is puking one minute,
yelling at Seth Rogen's character to continue having "sex" with her, and then she's passed out the next
minute.
Thank you in advance for any additional youtube clips/films/scenes you are able to direct me to! I'd be happy to share any of the ideas shared with me. Thanks!
