We recently re-wrote the training curriculum used for the Sexual Assault
Investigator Certification in Massachusetts. We included a section on
self-care and the impact of doing police work. The material for this
section was the work of Ed LeClair. He has given me permission to give
you his email contact at:
"Professor Edward LeClair has been a criminal justice professional
since1969. He has been active in Northeastern Association of Criminal
Justice Sciences since 1994 and is a past president. From 1969 to 1972,
Ed was one of four college faculty who founded the college accredited
prison education program in Massachusetts. Subsequently, he was founding
director of the first comprehensive educational program at Deer Island
House of Correction in Massachusetts. From 1974-78, Professor LeClair
served as Vice President of Operations for the Massachusetts Supported
Work parole research grant. Ford Foundation and USA Health Education and
Welfare department funded this grant. As Professor of Criminal Justice
at Salem State College, since 1978, he established the first Criminal
Justice degree program and worked with over thirty police departments in
the areas of domestic violence prevention, community policing and law
enforcement officer stress reduction. Ed was awarded $100,000.00 from
NIJ to study Community Policing in Salem, Danvers and Lowell. In 2005,
Ed and Jack McDevitt of Northeastern University performed the first
Massachusetts racial profiling research for the Falmouth Police
Department. During the last ten years, working with dozens of police
departments in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, Ed has researched,
designed and implemented the Law Enforcement Officer Stress Reduction
Program with unique training based upon gender differences. He is
currently developing a Stress Reduction training for Gay and Lesbian
police officers." (taken from MAWLE 2008 conference information).
We have also found the book and video, Emotional Survival for Law
Enforcement by Kevin Gilmartin, to be very useful.

I have a similar question regarding police
training...anyone have good articles or studies
about the emotional & physiological impact of trauma
-- specifically on memory & recall? I want to cover
this a bit when we have our police training in the
spring but I cannot find reliable materials.
Thanks,
Angela

Assault Response Team on campus. Our campus police
contacted us today to request a training for the
officers. They struggle with interviewing and
handling the survivors' questions and emotions.
What training tools/programs have others used? Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
