Laura,
The comments Ross made, I believe, are right on target. I'll say more on the
points he raised. In my view, the Orientation Director is making an
irresponsible suggestion that, if implemented, would be making a decision to
say it is OK for more sexual assault to occur at Northwestern and to be
satisfied with less impactful alcohol prevention programming. Length of
programming correlates with impact. Indeed there is a connection between
sexual assault and alcohol; however, it is ill advised to focus only on the
connections between these two topics in an orientation session. They have
unique dynamics and unique characteristics. They require unique educational
approaches and their own focus. I recommend you go back to the Orientation
Director and suggest that the person consider whether in a 168 Orientation
week (if it is 7 days, if not 24 x however many days) it is possible to give
1 hour to each topic. I believe it is advisable to give far more than an
hour to each. Schools now giving 20 hours to sexual assault (like the U.S.
Naval Academy) still could do more but that is a good start. Combining
sexual assault into an alcohol presentation is pathetic and sends a strong
message to students that the University does not care about this issue.
