I'm at a university with about 4,000 new students coming in each year. We've
been doing mandatory workshops on sexual violence prevention since 1992. It
is mandatory in that lack of attendance results in a hold on their
registration for the following semester's registration. Students told us
that if you are going to say it is mandatory then there needs to be a
consequence that makes it mandatory or students know they really don't have
to go. So we went with their wisdom. Last year, we moved the training to an
on-line program contracting with student success.
I know on-line programs don't work for every campus, but we are getting
positive feedback from our students and they are very comfortable with that
medium.

sexual violence
Dear WRAC-L Friends,
I know many of us will be preparing to leave for NWSA tomorrow, so just
wanted to send a quick addendum to my message from a couple of weeks ago.
As I mentioned below, my research on the legal issues surrounding campus
peer sexual violence is ongoing, and I am very interested in speaking to
folks on campuses about the issues on which it would be helpful to have some
legal research done. This is just brainstorming?I won?t be interviewing or
interrogating anyone I talk to! But to maximize the chances that I can talk
to as many folks as are interested, I?ve decided to generally hang out at
the cafe area next to the restaurant on level three of the hotel (called
simply the deli) during the times when I am not presenting. I will have a
sign referring to ?Education Law Research.? I hope you will swing by if you
are interested in chatting and have a spare moment or two. You can also
call or text my cell phone at 703-244-0390.
Thanks so much,
Nancy

At West Virginia University we have a required orientation component and all
these University 101 students have to either participate in the Movie and
discussion, Welcome to the Party (reelinsight.com) or complete an online SA
prevention module.

I know there are many good programs and materials--
but are there any (larger) universities that have actually made it MANDATORY
for all incoming freshmen to get education in this area?
