We have done some work in this area, but not research specifically. There are
several sides to this issue. I have worked with survivors in each situation.
First, there are the issues that US students face abroad and the problems not
only with cultural issues but with how each country handles sexual and
intimate partner violence. Also, one can't assume that just because a
student is in a first-world, industrialized country that the response will be
appropriate. Secondly, the issue of educating not only international
students traveling here, but also visiting scholars and spouses as to the
laws and the rights of victims is very important. In our case, if we are
aware that a trailing spouse is being abused, we will provide services and
support to her. Although the general inclination of UVA is to revoke a visa
of someone who violates the law, the ISO also understands that this might put
a spouse in even greater danger, so we try to respond appropriately. CalCASA
has a very useful information packet that you might want to request as well.
