Here are some contacts and suggestions for US citizens
traveling/living/studying abroad...
The US State Department has victim assistance specialists at their office of
Overseas Citizen Services. They can act as a liaison to victims and assist
with issues such as replacing a stolen passport; contacting family, friends,
or employers; obtaining appropriate medical care; obtaining copies of police
reports, etc.
Contact:

Bureau of Consular Affairs, Overseas Citizen Services (CA/OCS/PRI)

Contact information for emergency assistance and U.S. embassies, consulates,
and consular agencies overseas is listed on this website....

The Office for Victims of Crime has a Terrorism and International Victims
unit:

American Family Violence in Foreign Countries
The American DV Crisis Line works with abused American women and children in
foreign countries to provide advocacy and resources. It is accessible
toll-free from 175 countries. They can assist with obtaining travel
documents, relocation, pro-bono attorney consultation, discounted airfare,
etc.
Email:
help@866-USWOMEN
(879-6636)
Phone: 866-USWOMEN (879-6636)
When calling the crisis line from abroad, first dial your regional AT&T
operator. AT&T operators by country: http://www.busniess.att.com/bt/access.jsp
Other considerations:
If the victim did not report the crime while abroad, she/he may want to
contact local U.S. police, so that (depending on state's rules) she/he might
be eligible for crime victim compensation. This will vary as each state's
eligibility rules differ.
Reporting to local police and then taking that police report as part of a
"heads up" travel advisory notice to the relevant U.S. consulate/ embassy in
the country where the assault occurred. The US consulate travel sights may
post advisories and this may be particularly helpful in establishing a
pattern.
Copies of any reports to local police would also be helpful if the victim
chooses to file a civil lawsuit upon returning to the US, e.g. if the sexual
assault takes place in an American owned hotel or business.
Students may want to take contact information for feminist and/or victim
service organizations in respective countries. This is a great international
listing although I am not sure how often it is updated:
http://www.hotpeachpages.net or Victim Assistance On-line:
http://www.vaonline.org which lists victim assistance programs in
approximately 20 countries
I also know women who buy Plan B OTC and keep it in case they need it when
traveling abroad.

Good morning, friends!
I'm not an academic, but I feel the need to know more data about men's
violence against women. Especially when the so-called "Father's Rights"
movement drags out the same studies over and over, to show that women abuse
men just as much as vice versa.
Have any of you heard of "flash cards" to help non-academics like me memorize
relevant statistics and studies? One side of the card could have "How many
women are victims of rape or attempted rape by the age of 18" and on the
other it could have "1 in 4" along with the date of the study, the authors,
the number of women surveyed, etc.
I wish I could say I'll read all the studies out there, but the reality is I
have the attention span of a puppy. A more realistic solution for me (maybe
for you?) is to at least know the major components of the major, respected
studies on the topic.
Perhaps a state coalition somewhere has created these for their member
programs. Perhaps a Woman's Studies professor has created them for the
students in their Violence Against Women class. If such cards exist
somewhere, I'd love to pay for a copy. If they don't, I'd love to team up
with someone who knows the relevant literature - I'll try to transfer your
knowledge into "card form," and make the cards available to anyone who wants
them.
Until the violence stops, Ben.

Greetings!
Is anyone aware of good sources of information regarding international
students and rape, sexual assault, and/or intimate partner violence? I am
particularly interested in finding a good source regarding the prevalence of
these forms of violence effecting international students, as well as any
resources specifically aimed at assisting international students.
Any leads would be appreciated!

This is request is very timely for me, and I would
love to be included on any responses to Anna's
request for information. I am being interviewed on
camera Monday by our Study Abroad office to give
students tips & suggestions about differences they
may encounter abroad related to gender issues
and sexual harassment, as well as how to
handle being sexually assault while abroad. I have
some information to offer, but feel ill-equipped to
provide a comprehensive response, especially
considering that our students travel to many
different countries and customs and norms can vary
greatly. Any resources or suggestions?
Thanks,
Angela
