Hello!
I have never seen the program myself, but they have presented here at Emory
before my time.
The feedback I have received from both students and other staff members who
attended the presentation(s) has been similar to what Juliette has shared.
One of students I worked closely with mentioned that she felt re-victimized.
The presentations here on campus were probably in 2005 and/or 2006. Is there
a possibility that the program has changed since then?
Aline

Hello all-
I know i have addressed this before, but I unfortunately (and maybe for the
first time!) don't agree with Ben here. Unless there have been significant
changes to this program, and in talking to other campus folks with my same
concern, there have not been, this program to me, is very dangerous. It
sends the message that rape is mostly about miscommunication-even it's title
(sex signals) implies this. Another office brought this to the campus I used
to work at and it was a total disaster. students were offended and didn't
think it was funny. I believe it focuses too much on "reasoning" why a man
would rape (they didn't get it, they're confused, etc. garbage) and how women
need to be more direct, garbage, etc. and then rape wouldn't happen. We
know in doing this work, and also validated by lisak's research that it isn't
these poor guys that don't get it.
i already wrote to Dr. Fairchild with these thoughts and this information,
but if others are interested, I would recommend bringing in the following
group instead - they are amazing! http://www.alongwalkhome.org/programs.htm
i am sure we could pull up an archived discussion about this too - i remember
this from the past...
peace and in solidarity,
juliette

I have emailed to Dr. Fairchild off list, but wanted to answer her question
about Catharsis Productions and their play, "Sex Signals." I've seen it many
times, and am in awe of how interactive it is, how funny it is, and how
effective it is.
"Sex Signals" uses improvisational comedy to overcome audience defensiveness
and boredom, and they do it extremely well. I've seen huge audiences of
students at Orientation, mandated athletes, members of the Greek system, and
military officials captivated by the two actors playing the roles on stage.
Almost in a stealth fashion, the actors end up raising many of the most
important issues regarding sexual assault, consent, male and female
communication regarding dating and sex - all the while, keeping the audience
entertained and laughing while learning.
If you bring "Sex Signals" to your college or your community, you won't be
disappointed. And you'll probably want to bring them back every year.
Until the violence stops, Ben.
