Judy, there are a number of exemplary programs out there. I would suggest
you check out Mentors in Violence Prevention. They offer an excellent
training, and also approach it from a coed perspective (allowing for both
single-sex and coed sections for the training). It is cutting-edge in that
they take a bystander intervention approach that is pro-feminist and very
empowering for both men and women.
Also, if you have the funds, think about sending a few of the groups' leaders
to one of the national conferences where student groups gather to learn from
each other. We have 3 different peer groups, including One in Four, which
has been discussed on this list (which focuses on men only). One group of
peer educators has put together a training that uses different techniques
from a range of sources. Two graduate students who have done a good deal of
anti-violence work both on and off campus guided them in structuring their
training, and it is quite good. I'm sure there are others on this list who
also could advise you.

Subject: Peer Educator Training Suggestions?
We have a 15-year-old student group called SAVE (Sexual Assault and Violence
Education) that operates out of our women's center. They run several events a
year -- Week Without Violence in the fall, Take Back the Night in the spring,
and also sponsor films and speakers. They operate very informally as a club,
and get very little training.
I would like to arrange a training program for SAVE members to enable them
to be more effective peer educators and also to be able to respond in an
optimum way to other students who disclose being victims of sexual assault or
dating violence.
Do you have recommendations for consultants or programs that can do this kind
of training? Thanks very much.
Judy
