Two Position Openings with the
Department of Veterans Affairs Military Sexual Trauma Support Team:
Field/Program Development Coordinator and Male Veterans Coordinator
The Military Sexual Trauma (MST) Team of the Department of Veterans
Affairs Office of Mental Health Services (OMHS) is looking for
individuals with interests in education/training, program development,
outreach, and policy related to the treatment of mental and physical
health sequelae among veterans who experienced sexual assault and/or
sexual harassment during their military service.
Background
The MST Support Team works at a national level within the Veterans
Healthcare Administration to conduct monitoring of MST screening and
treatment, to coordinate MST-related education and training, and to
promote best practices in the field. Given legal mandates related to
treatment resources for veterans who experienced MST, the team also
works closely with VA*s OMHS to make recommendations regarding
national policy related to MST, to respond to Congressional and VA
leadership requests for information on this topic, and to engage in a
variety of other policy issues related to MST. The team has an
Education/Training Division based in Boston, MA and a Monitoring
Division based in Palo Alto, CA.
.
Position Descriptions
The Education/Training Division in Boston, MA has received funding for
two additional positions, a master*s-level Field and Program
Development Coordinator (GS-11) and a doctoral-level psychologist Male
Veterans Coordinator (GS-13).
The Field and Program Development Coordinator will primarily be
responsible for serving as a frontline contact person for VA clinicians
and other staff about MST-related information and materials. Part of
this role will involve monitoring current practices and programming in
the field, assisting facilities in program modification, conducting
needs assessments of the field, and increasing opportunities for
networking and communication between clinicians. He/she will also assist
the team in increasing VA*s capacity nationwide for providing
specialized MST-related care. Administrative responsibilities for the
team more generally, including budgeting and managing production and
national dissemination of education and outreach materials, are also a
component of the position. Candidates should possess at least a
master*s degree in mental health, public health, public policy or a
related field.
While some view sexual trauma as only a women*s issue, the
disproportionate ratio of men to women in the military results in
roughly equal numbers of men and women being seen in VA for issues
related to MST. The Male Veterans Coordinator would be tasked with
increasing awareness of the issues faced by male MST survivors and
developing resources and educational materials for clinicians specific
to the identification, assessment, and treatment of male MST survivors.
He/she will also be responsible for developing outreach and
psychoeducational materials for veterans about these issues and for
serving as a source of consultation to the field. Candidates should
possess a PhD in Clinical or Counseling Psychology from an
APA-accredited graduate program. He/she must be knowledgeable about the
nature and treatment of trauma-related mental health disorders, the
unique issues faced by male survivors and clinicians working with these
veterans and the principles of psychological assessment and measurement
in the context of applied research and program evaluation.
Demonstration of an interest in the development and dissemination of
educational materials is an additional asset.
Additional Information
Individuals in both positions will partner with existing team members
on education, veteran outreach, program development, and
resource-development initiatives related to MST. Recent projects have
included hosting monthly national training calls and an annual training
conference focused on MST, developing outreach posters and brochures for
veterans, creating a website accessible by VA staff to serve as a
repository for MST-related materials and resources, engaging in efforts
targeted at increasing veterans* access to care and promoting
MST-related program development nationally. Program evaluation to
document the scope and effectiveness of the team*s work will be a
critical piece of the team*s future efforts.
Opportunities for clinical work and research are available. Both
positions have an associated appointment with the Women*s Health
Sciences Division of the National Center for PTSD, VA Boston Healthcare
System. Salary for the Field and Program Development Coordinator ranges
from $61,000 - $80,000, depending on experience. Salary for the Male
Veterans Coordinator ranges from $87,000 - $113,000, depending on
experience.
