Dear colleaues;
FYI - I have a new presentation called "Language Matters:? Redressing
Eroticism, Victim-Blaming, and Vagueness in Legal and Social
Conversations about Violence" which is self-explanatory and reflects
work I've been doing for many years now in connection with a project I
developed at my law school called "The Judicial Language Project" where
we use socio-linguistic research to critique the language used by
courts to describe violence against women and children.? I also teach
this topic as a faculty member of a program run jointly by the NSVRC
and the Poynter Institute.? My power point addresses language problems
in law and society and is the first of its kind.?
I have also developed a presentation along with Tory Bowen, my client
and rape victim who was? ordered by a Nebraska judge not to use the
word "rape" during? her rape trial.? The story is an important lesson
in activism and law reform as it was a first of its kind effort to
ensure that Tory had a voice in the enforcement of her personal
constitutional rights in a criminal trial.? It is also an amazing story
of sexism in the courts - and the unbearable hurdles endured by women
seeking redress for sexual violence.? In the end, it is a story of
inspiration and hope - with lots of great messages about the benefits
of speaking up and speaking out.?
Feel free to contact me if these are topics your organization might be
interested in hearing more about at an upcoming event.?
I also want you to know about Angela Shelton's new presentation.? Many
of you know Angela as the creator of an excellent documentary
"Searching For Angela Shelton" and the author of a new book "Finding
Angela Shelton".? She is a survivor of severe child sexual abuse but
she is also a writer, actress and comedian who has created a new slide
show on recovery from trauma where she uses the metaphor of being
stabbed with a sword to express the pain of trauma, and the benefits of
removing the sword - and then using the sword - as a source of power.?
It's a great presentation.
