>  People, Healthy Places: Directions for Improving Community, Individual,
and Economic Health

Yesterday morning President Elect Obama voiced concerns that the health care
system is broken and crumbling and he called for a focus on prevention and
solutions that will ultimately save society money. The new administration
and Congress have a unique opportunity to reshape the federal government to
truly consider health and preventing illnesses and injuries before they
occur. Prevention Institute <http://www.preventioninstitute.org/>  and
PolicyLink <http://www.policylink.org/> , two organizations committed to
equity, health, and prevention, presented to the transition team the Healthy

>  People, Healthy Places memo, which identifies concrete actions for
improving the wellbeing of communities across the country, reducing health
disparities, and preventing disease while saving money and stimulating the
economy. We offer strategies for long term planning as well as actions to
implement in the short term through vehicles such as the economic stimulus
package. Using prevention strategies to create healthy communities is a
highly efficient mechanism for conserving healthcare funds, developing
needed infrastructure, and delivering effective vital services.

We encourage you to share this memo far and wide with your own networks and
contacts. We are in the process of preparing similar memos on equity and the
prevention of violence; please let us know if you would like to receive
these once finalized.

Best regards,

Samuel Davidson
