The governor of IL signed into law last week a requirement that
community colleges(and others)  "provide some form of sexual assault
awareness education to all incoming students, whether through a         
seminar, online training, or some other way of informing students."
(effective 1/1/09)

We are a very large community college that serves a variety of types of
students -many of whom bypass our formal orientation programs.

 What have other community colleges done with this type of
mandate(unfunded)?
 What is the definition of "sexual assault education" that we need to
use to comply with the letter and intent of the legislation.?

Thanks for the book suggestion, Ben.  FYI I think it's safe to say that
most of us do a great deal of work on intimate partner violence issues,
both education/prevention and intervention, whether or not it's in our
job titles.  Those on the list who work as independent
speakers/performers most likely have a more specific focus.

Good afternoon, 

 

I was wondering if anyone is aware of a gatekeeper-style of training
aimed at increasing entry points to student support services for
students affected by rape or sexual assault.  I am interested in
something similar to the QPR model for suicide prevention that trains
students, faculty, and staff to be better at responding to a friend or
student who may come to them looking for help or guidance after an
assault - mainly with referral skills and how not to shut someone down
when they are reaching out.

 

I would appreciate any leads people may have.

We have developed an 8 hour training for students, faculty, and staff to
increase their ability to provide support and more importantly
resources/referral on sexual assault, relationship violence, stalking,
and cyberstalking. We have piloted the program for the past couple of
years with our Residence Life department; the RAs and professional staff
who have gone through the training have said they found it beneficial.
We have had a similar program for our sorority women for over five years
and it has been quite successful. We started with Res Life since they
already had some basic active listening/helping skills. This year, we
are planning to expand the program into our athletic department, our
corps of cadets, and our academic advising department. We will be adding
in an active listening/helping skills component to those trainings since
those groups have not necessarily been trained on those issues. The
sorority program and the newer program operate on slightly different
models; I'd be happy to share our curriculum for both with anyone who is
