Hi everyone,
I'm writing from Oakland University's Gender & Sexuality Center in Rochester,
Michigan. We are a very new center and I am the first paid professional
running it (I have been here for one year). The GSC is a women's resource
center and LGBTQA (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning and ally)
resource center. I'd like to get some feedback as to what a university with
approx. 20,000 students should have in place for sexual assault prevention
and awareness. In reading the emails on this distribution list, I realize
many of you are very advanced in this area and I'd like to learn from your
experiences. Here are my questions:
1. What should the GSC have in place to take a proactive approach to sexual
assault prevention and awareness? (OU has historically taken a reactive
approach)
2. Are there start up grants for university's who are trying to establish
program resources and human resources specifically for sexual assault
prevention and awareness?
3. What currently exists at other university's
Currently, our police department handles sexual violence incidents. They
also offer a RAD (rape aggression defense system) program that is quite
popular.
Thank you!
