Hi Folks,
If you have a response for Alison (address in header), please reply directly
to her, but also copy the list, as I believe this would be of interest to
everyone.

Subject: Sexual violence on campus
I hope it's OK to put a question to the group and ask for private responses -
I don't think this is completely under the remit of the list, but it is about
Women's Studies research and our students.
Also, it's important and I don't know who else to ask! Joan - please forgive
me if I've over-stepped the mark.
I'm currently trying to start up a pilot study of sexual violence against
students at my university in the UK, with the hope that it can be extended
into a national prevalence study (you may find this hard to believe, but we
don't have one). The management have refused to support the research -
reading between the lines, I think they're worried that it might draw the
university into legal proceedings.
The question I want to ask the group is: of the studies that have been
conducted on college campuses in the US, how many (if any) have resulted in a
researcher having to testify in court or a university getting sued for
failing to protect its students? If I could reassure my management that it's
rare (or perhaps it's not?) they might be more willing to support my work.
We badly need a national prevalence study of sexual violence against students
in the UK, so I'm really hoping my university will back me.
Please respond to me privately at
(and please forgive me if I've broken list rules).
Best to all,
Alison
