I respectfully disagree with both Susan and Tony Porter's points -- Robin
Morgan's piece didn't set up a dichotomy of either/or between racism and
sexism -- it was a "these are parallel, and yet misogyny is so deeply rooted
in our culture that it's publicly acceptable even where overt racism
isn't..."
I'm struggling to understand how comparing and contrasting public responses
that reflect the interconnected isms makes the quote racist.
The coverage of the candidates who are seen as "different" from the old
straight white men who traditionally comprise our Presidential choices is
very revealing. I've heard quotes so far this cycle from voters saying, "I
just don't think I could vote for a..." Woman, Black Man, Mormon.
Those are all personal traits, not political stances or philosophies, and the
fact that people feel comfortable expressing their bigotry is disheartening.
Comparing what percent of voters say they would not vote for a woman -- any
woman -- to those who say they would not vote for a man of color -- any man
of color -- is neither racist nor sexist. It's an exploration of biases.
That's how I interpreted Robin's quote, and I appreciated getting to see it
through Ben's email.

Yeah, I think that's true. I was very moved by Morgan's Goodbye to All
That,
and felt that she really nailed the misogyny going on..but it would have
been better if she hadn't compared it to racism...setting up a
dichotomy/either/or....situation.....
