Good Afternoon all,
I am reaching out to you for some support in a project I began last
semester on my campus and am now finding that to get to the next step I
need input from the experts-you!
I have been working on the development of a college student specific
power and control wheel. One that is non-gendered (i want to appeal to
male victims) and one that would work for all sexual orientations. I
also thought that it would be really cool to make a "double ring"
format-the inner ring would be behaviors that a victim could identify
with, the outer ring would be behaviors that the bystanders would
recognize.
The project was started as the result of an interpersonal violence
survey that one of my students undertook last year. We found that if we
made a graph of behaviors experienced and charted it over existing power
and control wheels that it was very unbalanced. Additionally we felt the
need to include the many ways technology now plays into these
relationships.
Currently the text is in a 2 page word document. We still have 8
categories-using words and language that college students relate to, we
are working on clear definitions for these categories and then working
on making providing a sampling of behaviors for both victims and
bystanders.
I have been in touch with the Duluth program about my version of the
wheel. Their response is that they will not endorse it as an offical
"Power & Control Wheel" (e.g. it won't appear on their website) because
I refused to back down on the issue of using gender neutral pro-nouns.
On my campus I do not feel that I can discuss the topic of relationship
violence as only or mostly happening to females.
That said,
If anyone is curious to see what I have so far and be willing to offer
advice, input or suggestions I would be greatly appreciative. It was
always my intent to let you know when I had finished it and provide
access to this tool. However, I think the more minds involved in the
process at this point, the better.
Just email me at
and I will email you the document.
Thank you for being the resource you are,
