Funding New VAWA Programs!
ACTION ALERT- Monday, June 26, 2006
Please Forward Widely
TELL YOUR REPRESENTATIVE TO VOTE "YES" FOR FUNDING NEW VAWA PROGRAMS!
Tomorrow (Tuesday June 27, 2006) the House of Representatives will vote on
the Science, State, Justice and Commerce (SSJC) Appropriations bill, which
funds important VAWA programs at the Department of Justice.
Call your Representative today and urge them to vote for the
Inslee/Brown-Waite amendment, to fund critical VAWA programs for children and
youth, and other amendments that will increase funding for new VAWA programs!
What is happening now?
Right now, this bill includes important increases to both STOP (Services,
Training, Officers, Prosecutors) and Legal Assistance for Victims funding.
However, this bill does not include funding for any new programs created in
VAWA 2005.
Several amendments will be offered on the floor of the House of
Representatives tomorrow to fund new VAWA programs and we need your help! The
Inslee/Brown-Waite Amendment [offered by Congressman Inslee (D-WA) and
Congresswoman Brown-Waite (R-FL)], will propose new funding for programs to
serve children and youth, both those who have witnessed domestic and sexual
violence and those who have experienced it in their own relationships. In
addition, other amendments may be offered to support other critical resources
and services for victims of domestic and sexual violence.
This is a VERY EXCITING opportunity to increase funding for desperately
needed services for children in shelters, teens experiencing dating violence,
and other CORE SERVICES for children and youth!!
But none of this will happen without your help! Your member of Congress needs
to hear from you that these programs are important for your community.
What can you do?
Call your Representative today and ask them to vote "YES" on the
Inslee/Brown-Waite Amendment!
Tell them:
a.. Your name and the city and state you live in.
b.. "Please VOTE "YES" for the Inslee/Brown-Waite Amendment any other
amendments that fund new VAWA programs."
c.. Tell them how your programs are being hurt or how you cannot serve
victims (especially children and youth) in your communities because you need
more resources.
Never called your Representative before? Don't worry, it's easy!
When you call your Representative, your call will be answered by a
receptionist. Tell him or her that you want to leave a message for the
Representative. The receptionist will take down your message.
