Ben:
Depending on the midwestern state you are talking about, the students you spoke to may have significant civil legal remedies against the men who assaulted them, and potentially against the college as well. In Illinois, where I work, there is a new civil rights law for survivors of sexual assault (the Illinois Gender Violence Act 740 ILCS 82) that would allow the women you spoke with to bring suit against the perpetrator for a host of civil remedies (money as well as long-lasting stay away orders).
For anyone wishing to have more information on this law and civil relief for survivors, I can be contacted at 847-424-0700. I co-authored the law and led the fight for its passage in Illinois, and I am available for consultations on how to get a similar law passed in other states. (it's already been picked up and made into law in California--albeit with a shorter statute of limitations. In Illinois, survivors have 7 years after the rape/act of sex based violence).

Last week, I performed my play for a student group at a Midwestern =
university. The student who picked me up told me she had been raped =
during her first year, and had taken her rapist through the campus =
judicial system. The judicial board gave the guy a slap on the wrist (a =
stay-away order) which wasn't even enforced (he sat near her in the =
dining hall, she reported it and nothing was done). =20
The week before, at another Midwestern university, a woman reported a =
rape (after having attended one of my presentations!). 24 hours later, =
the perp was kicked out of his campus housing.
The first campus apparently does this as a pattern - many other women =
have had similar experiences (often with the same guy, who has been =
repeatedly assaulting women while the college does nothing). I've tried =
to hook this woman up with the local rape crisis center - maybe she'll =
have more luck with the non-campus judicial system. But do other folks =
see this kind of thing - campus judicial systems totally letting =
perpetrators off the hook? I know, our American judicial system does =
the same, but I wanted to hear if others have had this experience with =
campuses.
Thanks! - Ben

Quote of the month, October, 2005: "The sublime is encountered when we, =
for no good of our own, seek to do good for others...It means moving =
toward a goal or an ideal that is way beyond our own immediate needs, =
one that reaches far into the future, beyond even the years we know we =
will be allotted on this earth. =20
But seeking what is true is dangerous. When we are informed, we must =
act. Truth means responsibility. So there are things we prefer to be =
misinformed about, or hazy about. Whites don't really want to know how =
people of color experience their lives, for if we did, we would have to =
change...and change is scary."
