Hi Everyone-
So, after Ben Zeman posted the link to the article I wrote for the Dartmouth
newspaper regarding my resignation from
the position of Coordinator of the Sexual Abuse Awareness Program at
Dartmouth, I have been flooded by letters from around the country - from
administrators in large, state institutions to small, private ones saying
that they are struggling with the same issues.
I wanted all of you to know this for two reasons:
1. Dartmouth appears to be no better or worse in terms of its commitment to
these issues so please, please do not hesitate to apply for the job. I wrote
the article in response to a previous article in which someone very
inaccurately described the conditions of my resignation - not to discourage
applicants. The women of Dartmouth need you!
2. In light of the response I received it is clear that many, many people on
this listserve are struggling with the perceptions of their institutions that
having someone advocate for victims (I wasn't even allowed to use the term
"advocate") is a conflict of interest, that in many ways the places we work
(or "worked" in my case) aren't really sure they want us to be doing our
jobs. I found the letters moving and validating but also very disturbing.
This is not about me or Dartmouth, this is a larger problem amongst
institutions across the country. I am not suggesting the positions within
universities should not exist, I feel honored to have been able to work with
students in that context and to push people's thinking in the ways that I
did, but I am trying to think about ways people can continue to do this work
in good conscience without burning out. To be honest, there is a little
self-serving piece here too: from my unemployed vantage, I am trying to
figure out what's next for me and would be very interested in any ideas you
all might have.
I'm feeling a little disillusioned at this moment when we're all sending our
seniors into the world with those commencement speeches about doing the right
thing but so many of us can't even talk about what's happening on our
campuses with colleagues who are in the field ( I received some e-mails
asking me to keep their disclosures confidential). Can we talk about this?

Not mentioned in this release below is that other shirts objectifying
women and glamorizing date rape and domestic violence that had nothing
to do with alcohol were also removed.

In response to complaints from the media and advocacy groups across the
country, clothing designer Abercrombie & Fitch announced that it will
withdraw its T-shirt line containing suggestive taglines such as
"Sotally Tober" and "If you can read this, you need another cocktail"
effective immediately. Groups complained that the shirts depicted
underage drinking as socially acceptable and a 'cool' thing to do for
its young customers.
