In terms of creating media visibility for a stalking victim, I wondered
whether this would created an unnecessary danger for the victim. We are
lucky to have a member of our campus police department who is trained in
threat assessment and stalking. So I asked and I want to share his response
with the list.
Sgt. Rich Wilson says victims should consider many factors prior to going
public on such an issue. Some do so because they see it as a means of
empowerment, closure, healing, or bringing the issue public to help other
victims come forward. Anyone considering going public should really consult
with a threat assessment professional to discuss the advantages and
disadvantages unique to their particular case before exposing themselves to
the potential consequences.
