Calling All Men's Groups and Men Interested in Doing Anti-Sexism/Anti-Violence Work

Dartmouth College will be hosting a conference of women's and gender centers this upcoming October 3rd. As it stands 10 centers have committed to sending representatives. As Dartmouth is home to a rapidly expanding anti-sexism, anti-violence men's group the Men's Project we thought it would be an ideal opportunity to get such organizations together to discuss a variety of questions: What issues do the various college men's groups address? What sort of programming, events, or actions do these groups host or employ? What problems or challenges do all of these groups face? How can various men's groups work together?

Our plan is to have people arrive in Hanover on the afternoon/evening of Thursdsay, October 2. That night there will be a welcome and evening program by Tony Porter and Ted Bunch two men whose work on men's violence against women is celebrated internationally (see http://www.opdv.state.ny.us/criminal_justice/corrections/bip/institute.html).

On Friday, men's groups and women's centers will meet concurrently (with one joint session). We are thrilled that Ted and Tony will be participating in the men's group meetings. To finish off that day, Sut Jhally (http://www.sutjhally.com/) will give a talk about his latest work with Jackson Katz studying connections between pro-wrestling and violence against women.

Finally, on Saturday, October 4, there will be a day-long symposium called "Intimacy and Violence" focusing on relationship violence. This subject has been largely ignored on college campuses, and we hope to send all participants back to their campuses with new perspectives from the field. Workshop subjects will include batterers' programs, violence in LGBT relationships, violent relationships on college campuses and connections between substance use and violence.

Students who attend the men's groups day are encouraged to stay for the Saturday symposium. Housing with Dartmouth student hosts will be arranged for all students who plan to attend either or both days. There is no fee for participating in the Friday sessions.
