Sexual Assault of Female Air Force Academy Cadets Is Much More
Common Than Reported, Survey Finds
By JEFFREY R. YOUNG
Almost a quarter of the female cadets who graduated from the
U.S. Air Force Academy this year were sexually assaulted at
the academy, and nearly 12 percent were victims of attempted
rape, according to preliminary results of a survey conducted
by the Department of Defense.
The survey results, outlined in a report by the department's
inspector general, were obtained by NBC News and posted on the
MSNBC Web site last week (requires Adobe Reader, available
free).
Lt. Col. Ken McClellan, a spokesman for the Defense
Department, would not comment on the findings, which he said
were a "preliminary assessment that was basically leaked" to
reporters. He would not verify the survey data, but he said
that "it looks like the real McCoy." He said a final report on
the survey is due out "later this fall."
According to the current report, officials surveyed 581 of the
academy's 659 female cadets in May. Their answers indicate
that far more incidents of sexual assault or harassment occur
at the institution than have been reported to authorities.
Nearly 69 percent of female cadets said that at the academy
they had experienced sexual harassment, which was defined in
the survey as "unwanted and uninvited sexual attention." Among
graduating seniors, 24 percent said they had been sexually
assaulted.
The top reasons given by cadets for not reporting the
incidents were fear of ostracism by peers and fear of being
punished for other misconduct if they came forward.
Sen. Wayne Allard, a Republican of Colorado who has led
Congressional inquiries into reports of sexual abuse at the
academy, told the Rocky Mountain News last week that the
survey data show "it's a worse problem than we were led to
believe initially by the Air Force."
Air Force officials released a statement last week saying that
the survey data are "consistent with the data to which the
AF's own internal review had access." But an internal Air
Force report, released in June, found that fewer than 5
percent of female cadets and 1 percent of male cadets had been
involved in allegations of sexual assault (The Chronicle, June
20).
The statement noted that Air Force leaders are in the process
of changing policies and practices and that "we will chart a
fundamentally different course for the academy."
Cadets answering the survey were also optimistic about the
future. Almost all of them, 96 percent, said they believe
present leaders were "making honest and reasonable efforts to
prevent or stop uninvited and unwanted sexual attention."
