Re: Linda's request for video suggestions.

My absolute favorite is "Rape Is..." by Cambridge Documentary Films. This is the only video that I know of that takes the discussion to a different level, linking acquaintance rape, stranger rape, prostitution, rape as a weapon of war and terrorism. Eve Ensler provides the glue that links the issues together, although diverse voices are represented on the film. However, while this is a great film to show to a class or a peer educator training, when you have the time for discussion, it isn't a great one for a basic awareness programs, because of its complexity.

I also like "Tough Guise" (men and masculinity in our culture) and "War Zone" (street sexual harassment) although the latter raises some difficult questions about race and class that the filmmaker addresses in a more recent work. These are available from the Media Education Foundation.

Others I like:
"Voices Heard, Sisters Unseen" (domestic violence from a multicultural context) (Women Make Movies).

A great conversation starter about consent and self-defense is the scene from Ally McBeal where her roommate (I've gone blank on her name) uses her kick-boxing to defend herself. Because she is herself pretty sexually aggressive, it raises lots of questions and can really test both students and the instructor. Lively discussion definitely results. But you have to be ready for that.
