Hi All,
We invited Carolyn Gage to perform her play, "The Second Coming of Joan of Arc" here at UVA last fall--she was amazing. She really challenges women and men to rethink a whole range of issues, from popular historical accounts of Joan's story to how rape figures into the oppression of women--and lesbians, specifically-- throughout history. She is a completely lovely person and easy to work with.
I got this message from another listserve, but thought it might be of interest to our New England members.

I have some good news about a possible funding source for centers with budget cuts... Here it is:
I have just gotten into a juried directory of professional artists here in Maine. This directory is tied to a program called NEST (New England States Touring), which offers FUNDING for presenters interested in booking folks on the roster... According to the materials I received, "New England non-profit organizations located outside of Maine can apply to NEST for up to 50% of [my] fee."
I offer a 90-minute performance of my award-winning radical feminist interpretation of Joan of Arc, The Second Coming of Joan of Arc. The last year, I have toured to Chatham College, University of Virginia, Hollins University, the University of Oregon at Eugene, Kansas State Unversity, and Queen's College in Belfast (with shows in Kerry and Cork). I was invited to perform at the World SUmmit of Economic Sustainability in Johannesburg. Being based in Maine, my travel expenses to New England states would be minimal.
I invite you to visit my website and/or ask me any questions about this wonderful funding program... My website is www.carolyngage.com And I invite you to read the following endorsement from Dale Daigle of Washington College in Chesterton, MD...

"Ms. Gage's visit to Washington College was inspiring. Her passion for what she does is so obvious and her intellect so impressive that students and faculty alike were immediately and permanently engaged by her presentation and presence.
Washington College is, in part, known for it's writing program. We have regular visits by well known writers --everyone from Edward Albee and Israel Horovitz to Toni Morrison and John Barth in recent years. I can honestly say I have never seen students so enthusiastic about a guest. Another thing that is unusual and impressive is that she has kept in touch with several of our students since her visit.
One of the things I was most impressed with was the clarity of her aesthetics and politics. This is a person who does not apologize for her agenda or the militancy necessary to further that agenda. The amazing thing is she combines that unswerving commitment with compassion, understanding, warmth, and generosity.
She is totally committed to her art in a way that is truly inspiring.
Don't let the lesbian/feminist moniker scare you, this is a formidable artist in every way."
