Hi all!
This Thursday at 7:00pm we will be meeting in New Cabell 383, where fellow VAAer Derrick Blakely will tell us about Emile Durkheim. Here's his abstract:
We'll discuss sociologist/philosopher Emile Durkheim's views on religion, starting with a brief summary of his overall approach to sociology and then getting into a lot of the claims he makes about idolatry, secular life, suicide rates, and the importance of religion to societies. This will segue into an interesting discussion about how people rely on religions for support, why religions exist, and how we should define "religion" to begin with.
Hope to see you there!
