Hi all,

Our meeting this Thursday will be in New Cabell 332 at 7pm! Our very own Derrick Blakely will be giving a talk on cargo cults. Here's a brief overview of what he'll be talking about:

The "cargo cult" is a religious phenomenon that emerged in many Pacific indigenous populations during the first half of the 20th century. A reaction to the turmoil induced by colonialism and World War II, cargo cults are well known for their attempts to acquire European goods and technology through ritual means. This talk will focus on the beliefs and ritual practices of these movements, their significance to anthropology, and the appropriateness of the term "cargo cult."

This should be a fascinating talk. Hope to see you there!

Scott
