Hey VAA,
Tonight, we'll be meeting for a discussion-debate hybrid; consider it a chance to air your views, partake in friendly exchange, and have an intellectual icebreaker of sorts. We'll be having a moderated conversation in which we address the following questions:
[As our meeting falls on 9/11, we've decided to concern our first question with it.]
(1) Was Islam a significant "cause" of 9/11?
(2) How should secular institutions replace churches as centers of community?
(3) Would it ever be worthwhile for everyone to believe in a false religion if it had universally positive effects?
We may also get to questions less concerned with religion directly, after surveying the desires of the audience, like:
- Can moral claims be true or false?
- Would it be ethical to kill a sleeping person? ("This is a debatable question?" You bet!)
- Is humanity destined for scientific utopia?
- After Darwin, is it possible to consider human behavior as driven by anything besides reproduction?
See you there at:
7:00 P.M., New Cabell 411, 9/11
Farewell,
John Kubinski
