Hello VAAers,
Plans for the fall semester are being made as I type, and the officers and myself have some announcements to make about upcoming changes.
Firstly, we re-affirm our mission statement, in that the "primary goal of the Virginia Atheists and Agnostics is to eliminate the stigma of atheism at the
University of Virginia." To that end, we've resolved to expand and restructure our executive board - that is, we're having a re-building, a second wind, a perestroika! These changes are purposed to enhance the reach and effectiveness of the VAA.
The executive board now consists of the following positions:
President
Vice President
Treasurer
PR Officer
Social Events Officer
General Events Officer
Community Service Officer
Social Media Officer
These positions reflect specific goals our organization has going forward. The previous officers are currently filling these new positions, and work has already begun on fronts such as event planning, social media, and PR.
Additionally, to execute specific tasks, the officers will be overseeing committees, consisting of a small number of individuals with sub-positions. For example, the PR Officer will be in charge of a committee member responsible for flier design, and another who submits our events to promotional outlets such as EngageUVA and Connections. The final structure of committees will be decided before the end of August, and more will be said about filling sub-positions in the coming weeks. (If you think you might want to get involved with one of these small committee jobs, do let me know, but again, more details will be forthcoming.)
With a restructured organization, and an invigorated executive board, we are all excited about the possibilities for growth and prosperity in the coming year. Expect the VAA to have a more diverse array of well-planned and highly organized events which advance goals such as recruitment/outreach, awareness raising, and broadcasting atheist points-of-view. So as to be true to the slogan on our shirts, the VAA's presence on grounds will be increasing in general. And of course, the club will remain (and grow) as a social community which fosters meaningful interaction and solidarity among its members.
Be awesome and come out to the activities fair so that we'll have a good showing, and stay tuned for more announcements about the beginning of the semester and what we are planning.
One step closer to atheist world (or UVA, more humbly) domination!
Things will get better.
John Kubinski
