The Secular Coalition for America is a nonprofit in DC that lobbies the federal government on behalf of nontheists. It will soon be setting up an organization here in Virginia to lobby the Virginia state government on behalf of nontheists. If you are curious what kind of issues they deal with, you can see some of them here. If you want to get involved in the new nontheist lobbying organization here in Virginia, there is a preliminary conference call scheduled for next Tuesday. The details are below.

Hello, everyone!

I hope your summer breaks are off to a rousing start!  (And for those of you still in classes - hang in there!!)

SCA logoI wanted to get in touch about a neat opportunity coming up in your area.  The Secular Coalition for America (which SSA is a member organization of) is beginning an affiliate program with the goal of having state-level secular coalitions in every state by the end of 2012.  These state-level affiliates will focus on addressing church-state separation issues and lobbying at the state level.

The first eight states to launch these state-level affiliates are Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Virginia.  The Secular Coalition for America will be hosting conference calls for each state (according to the schedule below) to get things started.  This is a neat opportunity for Secular Student Alliance affiliates!  If you, your campus group, or any individual members of your group are interested in learning more or getting involved, you'll want to participate in these calls.  The conference call number is 530-881-1400, and the participant access code is 978895.

If you are interested, just join the call!  But if you have any questions or concenrs, please contact Kelley Damerow, or 202-299-1091 x204 to get more information.

Here are the scheduled calls (all times are Eastern Time).  I hope you'll consider getting involved.

Alabama- Monday, June 4th at 11am
Arizona- Monday, June 4th at 3pm
Colorado- Tuesday, June 5th at 3pm
Connecticut- Wednesday, June 6th at 1pm
Hawaii- Tuesday June 5th at 4pm
Kentucky- Wednesday, June 6th at 3pm
Massachusetts- Thursday June 7th at 2pm
Michigan- Wednesday June 6th at 2pm
Pennsylvania- Tuesday June 5th at 2pm
Virginia- Tuesday June 5th at 1pm

Cheers!
