Dear Colleagues:

I am writing to you to seek your wisdom. After nearly 30 years of work as a prevention educator and victim advocate in higher education (and nearly 40 years total in this work), I am writing a book for parents of prospective and current college students on sexual misconduct, how it is addressed in the educational setting, and how parents can effectively advocate and support their children, should they be impacted by this violence. I'm writing this book in a style that hopefully is accessible to anyone, especially to folks who may not have attended college themselves, or those whose first language is not English.

Based on my own experience in this work, it is the parents of first-generation college students or international students, parents who are working class, immigrant, BIPOC, and parents of LGBTQ+, gender non-conforming and other marginalized students, who need this information the most.

I also want this book to be engaging and full of stories from those who have had these experiences. I am collecting stories both from survivors and from parents, and I want diverse voices to be represented. If you, or someone you know, is a survivor, or a parent of a survivor, would you please share this email with them?  I will collect these stories in two ways: electronically and by phone interview (if someone is more comfortable doing that).

In either case, I will collect their permission either electronically or I will mail a permission form for them to sign. ALL participants will be identified using a pseudonym. When they fill out the survey, I ask for their preferred nom de plume.

Many thanks for your time and thank you for spreading the word.

Sincerely,

Claire N. Kaplan, Ph.D.
