These may be old and dated at this point but some of my go-tos include:
- Getting Played: African American Girls, Urban Inequality, and Gendered Violence, Jodi Miller - Explores risk and protective factors for adolescents in an urban african american community. Prevention recommendations at all levels of the SEM including really great community level recommendations.
- Hey, Shorty!: A Guide to Combating Sexual Harassment and Violence in Schools and on the Streets, Joanne Smith - Explores girs experiences with street harassment and prevention startegies through a Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) approach.
- Dude, You're a Fag: Masculinity and Sexuality in High School, CJ Pascoe - Ethnographic study, explores HS gender socialization, sexism and homophobia. I think of it for prevention because it is exploring the root causes of gender based violence and offers recommendations for schools.
If you are looking for books for adolescents, I like the following novels/memoirs to explore issues of sexual violence, domestic violence, and healthy realtionships and healing:
Know My Name: A Memoir, Chanel Miller (I would recommend for educators, advocates, and students)
Eleanor & Park, Rainbow Rowell - one of my all time favs, beautifully written, can't put it down, lots of things to talk about including bystander intervention, characteristics of healthy/unhealthy relationships, domestic violence, victim blaming, coping strategies, etc.
Speak, Laurie Halse Anderson - This is a classic and is taught in many high schools around the country. The author recently published a memoir, Shout, haven't read it yet but it's on my list. Learn more on this NPR piece.
==============Hello friends!
I hope you are all healthy and managing self-isolation on top of your job duties. It’s a very strange time, indeed.
I have a question: What books that you would recommend that have a focus specifically on prevention? This doesn’t have to be strictly for the college-aged population, although those may be included. I’m interested in titles that focus on K-12 and that are not research-focused (more for practitioners, teachers, etc.)
Many thanks,
Claire
