SCI Webinar COVA-19

SUNY Student Conduct Institute Free Webinar Series

Dear Colleagues,

Like everyone in higher ed, SUNY is working hard to address challenges raised by the novel coronavirus in ways that are best for our students and communities. These are difficult times, unprecedented in the modern era, and this comes at a time when student affairs, Title IX, and campus law enforcement/public safety have been engaged in multiple investigations and adjudications of violations and crimes (among all other tasks). While these are often the folks called to the front lines of corona virus response, as we adjust to the new normal of 2020, we must remember that our obligations in those cases have not disappeared.

To help our colleagues continue and complete their work in this changing environment, we are putting together a free two-part webinar series to take place this Friday and Monday

These two webinars are aimed at helping student affairs, Title IX, law enforcement/public safety, and college attorneys identify and work through some of the substantive and practical elements of conducting investigations and adjudications in a distance, digital, or socially distanced environment.

The series is available for SUNY and non-SUNY campuses. The sessions are at 2:00 (EST) on March 20 and March 23 and while they are, of course, completely free, the webinar system does require pre-registration.

Sessions will cover different challenges that arise. Full descriptions in attached.

Joint Guidance on the Title IX Regulations

Even as we work through the challenges posed by the novel coronavirus, as hard as it may be to believe, the Department of Education has indicated that it is still moving forward on the issuance of Title IX regulations. This may lead to significant changes in the investigation and adjudication of certain college cases. We are aware of the level of anxiety on our campuses posed by the uncertainty around the regulations (and unfounded rumors from certain quarters about immediate implementation obligations have not helped). To help with review and analysis if the Regulations do issue, the SUNY Student Conduct Institute is proud to partner with 40+ attorneys from 15+ law firms and institutions on a Joint Guidance on Federal Title IX Regulations.

In the Joint Guidance, we will review each provision and provide analysis and initial guidance regarding implementation and challenges that may arise. The Joint Guidance is intended to be thoughtful, high-quality, and widely available to institutions large and small, public and private, urban and rural, well-resourced, and budget challenged. Crucially, there will be no charge to access the Joint Guidance or any of its components and it will be continuously updated as additional resources come online. While hosted and coordinated by SUNY, this is a project of equal partners dedicated to collegially helping colleagues in higher education.

We hope these webinars and guidance documents can be somewhat helpful to our colleagues in what continues to be a deeply challenging time.

With best wishes to all.

Sincerely,

Joe
