Important message from our National colleagues:

DV and SA agencies and organizations may be targeted by an organization opposing VAWA.

The purpose of this message is not to alarm you or cause you to stop doing interviews, but to simply be more vigilant in the face of potential threats. The person contacting your organization may be disguised as news media, a researcher, a documentary filmmaker, or similar guise. Or may even pose as an intern or volunteer.

Remember James O’Keefe?  He and his organization “Project Veritas” have targeted progressive groups like Acorn and Planned Parenthood by conducting what seem to be legitimate interviews and then cutting-and-splicing the video to make it appear that there has been wrongdoing. Despite evidence that the videos were doctored, some people, including some members of Congress, still believe that both Acorn and PP were engaged in wrongdoing.

Now we have learned from another listserv, via a reliable source, that O’Keefe’s group has asked a 3rd party media organization (HARO) to help it obtain interviews on the following topic:

Interested in the impact of the Violence Against Women Act of
2000 on the prosecutions of domestic violence during this
period. Looking for background and on-camera interviews.

Requirements: Looking for an on-camera interview. Prefer east coast for
convenience, but will work with anyone nationwide.

If you or one of your programs receives a request like that one, or anything similar, please do not respond, and let NNEDV know by emailing the communications team at

Just a reminder: It’s always a good idea to make sure that individuals contacting you for interviews/research are who they say they are. If they are not local, you can look them up on the media organization’s website, or ask them to provide you with verification that they are actually from that outlet/institution.

Don’t stop doing interviews – just make sure that you are talking with a reporter/researcher that you actually do want to talk to!

Onward,

Kim
