We are not providing any online advocacy; however, due to being in a hybrid counselor education program, I am aware of two HIPAA-compliant synchronous web platforms:  Adobe Connect and Zoom.  Zoom has a free version which is not HIPAA compliant.  But you can purchase the HIPAA-compliant one.

Subject: Online/Distance Advocacy (cross-posted)

Good Morning:

We have been asked by our online students to extend advocacy services to their population (and students studying abroad). Since many of them are not local to our University, we will need to look into other ways to provide advocacy. The telephone is great for some situations, and doesn’t work for all. We would like to be able to offer some chat, text, and webcam options and are struggling to figure out a secure way to communicate in a confidential manner.

Something like Skype would be ideal, however that is not a secure communication mode. So my question is twofold.

1.   Is anyone using one of the HIPPA approved tele-counseling programs to provide this type of advocacy? What do you like about it, and where does it fall short?

2.   Are there other areas of providing this service that I might want to have on the radar? We have already checked our limits of confidentiality, and as long as we are in state, confidentially holds regardless of where the student resides.
